Steven Johnson og Allan Simonsen starter Dick Smith Sandown 500 fra 12. pladsen efter de to kvalifikationsløb.
Startopstillingen til 500 km-løbet skulle afgøres af resultatet af andet kvalifikationsløb, hvor seriens faste kørere starter der, hvor deres respektive gæstekørere var sluttet i første løb.
Allan Simonsen fik i sit løb en god start og fandt sit tempo midt i feltet. Men på sjette omgang ville køreren i Simonsens bil fra sidste år, Pepsi Max Crew-raceren, det anderledes. Et overhalingsforsøg sendte danskeren af banen og ud af løbet, så Steven Johnson havde en stor opgave for sig. Den tog australieren på sig og kørte sig frem fra en P26 til en 12. plads.
